Pet Nutrition

Pets need Protein, Carbohydrates, Fat, Vitamins, Minerals and Water to maintain and repair the body and to help fight disease and illness.

What your pet is fed is a major factor in keeping him healthy. A fresh nutritious diet will provide your pet with energy and the nutrients to run the body and repair damaged cells.

A Pet that is fed a nutritious balanced diet will have more resistance to infections and disease and will recover more quickly if he becomes ill or injured.

Vitamins A, E and C plus minerals such as Zinc, Selenium and Iodine are essential for a strong immune system.

High meat protein foods provide amino acids which are critical for the body to deal with stress conditions such as healing of wounds, disease and infection.

Dogs are Carnivores they require a meat based diet. They have sharp teeth, small molars, simple stomachs and short digestive tracts to chew and digest meat.

PROTEIN is used for building and maintaining the body. It is essential for healthy growth and muscle tone. It supplies the body with the building material for tissue. Protein can be found in the pet's body: bones, ligaments, hair, skin, organs and muscles.

Protein food sources come from animals and plants. Animal (meat) protein is higher in quality and more digestible than vegetable protein

Proteins are made up of 22 amino acids. Eleven are called essential amino acids and are not manufactured in sufficient quantity by the pet's body, they must be added to the diet. They are: arginine, histodine, leucine, valine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, tryosine, threonine and trypyophan.

CARBOHYDRATES usually come from plants, they vary in digestibility.
There are two forms of carbohydrates: Simple and Complex.

Simple Carbohydrates - include starches and sugars. Good sources are rice and oats. These are easily digested by the pet. One of the functions of simple carbohydrates is to supply energy (glucose) for the organs and the central nervous system. Carbohydrates provide energy. Reserve energy is stored as glycogen.

Complex Carbohydrates - include soluble and insoluble fiber. Fiber is essential for proper digestion and stool formation.

FAT is the main source of energy. Animal fat contains essential fatty acid and provide a highly digestible energy source. Fatty acids are needed for metabolic regulation. Fat is a carrier of fat soluble vitamins. Animal fats help promote glossy hair coat and healthy skin. Chicken fat is highly digestible and an excellent source of unsaturated fatty acids.
